Recognising the signs of addiction is the first step in getting help, either for yourself or for a loved one.

Addiction effects every person it touches in different ways. As a result, the signs and symptoms of addiction will vary from person to person, and will also depend on the type of addiction.

What are the psychological symptoms of addictions?

There are a range of psychological symptoms that can indicate someone is suffering from an addiction. Common psychological symptoms include:

  • Mood swings
  • Short temper
  • Lack of energy
  • Paranoia
  • Agitation
  • Problems with memory
  • Low self-esteem
  • Lack of self-worth
  • Defensiveness
  • Lack of focus
  • Poor judgement
  • Feelings of hopelessness

If an individual has any existing mental health conditions, these may also be intensified by the addiction.

What are the behavioural and social signs of addiction?

There are a number of behavioural and social signs that may occur in individuals with an addiction. These include:

  • Loss of interest in activities and events
  • Withdrawing from responsibility
  • Avoiding social situations
  • Changes in social groups
  • Poor attendance at work or school
  • Poor performance at work or school
  • Secretive behaviour
  • Dishonest behaviour
  • Financial unpredictability

What are the physical symptoms of addictions?

As well as psychological and behavioural symptoms, many addictions can also have physical symptoms, including:

  • Neglecting physical appearance
  • Neglecting personal hygiene
  • Irregular sleep patterns
  • Insomnia

Of course, it’s important to remember that many of the signs and symptoms of addiction can also have other causes and explanations, so it’s important never to jump to conclusions.
